Why do colorways look more or less saturated on different yarn bases?

The characteristics of the constituent fibers and whether the fiber has been chemically treated will impact how a particular yarn base takes dye.

Superwash yarns have been chemically treated to smooth the fibers and alter the exterior layer called cuticle scales. This causes superwash yarns to absorb dye more deeply giving them a more saturated appearance.

Non-superwash and alpaca yarns have not been chemically treated. The natural scales remaining on these fibers prevents dye from penetrating the fiber as easily and causes dye to spread more over the surface. This results in a more muted appearance.

Although it is not chemically treated, mohair fiber tends to absorb dye more readily than suri alpaca fiber, giving it a brighter and more saturated appearance.

These differences can be seen in the colorway Harajuku in the following yarn bases (L to R): Mohair Lace (non-superwash), Merino Sock (superwash), Natural Fingering (non-superwash), and Silky Alpaca Fingering (non-superwash).

Where do you source your yarn/fiber?

My undyed yarn is sourced from a UK-based supplier. All of my bases are ethically sourced from farms that do not practice mulesing.

My undyed spinning fiber is sourced from a US-based supplier and US farms.

How do you dye your yarn?

I dye my yarn using professional acid dyes. These colors won’t fade, even after repeated washings in cool water.

Do your colorways bleed?

My process involves exhausting the dye bath allowing the dye to fully absorb before rinsing and soaking in wool wash. Minor color bleeding may occur on the first wash, especially with extremely dark colors.

What is the process for dyed-to-order?

For dyed-to-order product listings, select the yarn base you like from the drop down and enter the desired quantity. 

If the yarn base and quantity is not already in stock, I will dye it to order for you. The product listing will include the latest estimate for turnaround time for dyed-to-order fulfillment.

In cases where orders include a mix of in-stock and dyed-to-order items, the entire order will wait to ship until all items are ready.

Do you ship internationally?

I can facilitate international orders via my Etsy storefront. For an international order, please use the contact form and let me know what you would like to order. I will create this as a custom Etsy order for you.

Do you offer wholesale?
