We passed through the west gate and into dreamscape, a still-sleeping city soaked in early morning light. We turned a corner, into a square framed by darkened restaurants and a silent merry-go-round. Our sandals clicked and clacked over time-softened tiles. Under a canopy of deep green umbrellas shielding dew-damp tables, our guide tapped a toe on Roman mosaics as a local unshuttered a street organ. A black cat circled his ankles, unfazed by the instrument’s honks and whiny purrs. One street over, a gelato shop, open preposterously early, served me a preposterous breakfast. Mum wrinkled her nose—\u003cem\u003eLavender ice cream\u003c\/em\u003e? I \u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003e\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003epaddled it into my mouth with a tiny bamboo spoon: herbal, not floral, like a soft dance of sage and vanilla. I couldn’t convince mum that it tasted nothing like the soaps and spritzes in the purpled storefronts.
